The constant attacks against Asami range from: ‘too rich’, ‘too beautiful’, ‘too good’, ‘not enough flaws’, ‘totally an Equalist’, and ‘no development’. There was a great episode for her last week when I thought these might slow down but it hasn’t been the case, and they started fresh again after the latest clip. 

These attacks are sometimes not only pointless (the ones obviously tagged ‘Makorra’ because they’re lashing out in ship rage), but also very angering and even a little despairing to people who might actually be like Asami. I get it, she’s fictional, but in every fictional character there’s a lot of reality hidden in their emotions and their actions that people can’t help but see themselves in. 

Asami is a girl that was raised with privilege, yes, but you can’t attack her for having money. That’s like attacking someone because they’re poor; you don’t see anyone going after Mako and Bolin for being down on their luck with money, do you? No, because it’s ridiculous. To judge a person on their social status will always be one of the most asinine arguments, honestly. Unless they use their money or lack thereof for hurtful purposes, why does it matter? And Hiroshi built his fortune by himself — loan or not, he earned that money and Asami doesn’t go around saying she’s rich constantly, so back off the money. 

Also, sorry to break it to you, but pretty girls can also be genuinely nice. They can have good friends, be good at sports and activities, and they can even have fun doing things you wouldn’t assume. She likes what she likes and she shouldn’t be prejudiced against just because she has a pretty face. You’ll go on and on to not judge someone that doesn’t have an attractive appearance and try to defend them, but as soon as an overtly pretty, likable character comes along — oops, they’re evil and a bitch. 

Asami has overcome a lot in her life, I’m sorry if you can’t accept or see that, but she has. Her mother was murdered when she was very small, she was likely even in the house when it happened and she had to grow up with a father that most likely overprotected her. It’s not easy to live in a state of worry from a parent who makes sure you can defend yourself, probably has strict rules against who she was friends with, and ended up using his wealth to make sure she’d never be killed like her mother. And then that father, whose protectiveness and love overshadowed what he was hiding, comes out as a man trying to hurt her friends, people she cares about and loves regardless if one is even of the same bending that killed her mother, and she fights back. She doesn’t give in, she doesn’t leave them behind because she loves him more — she fights for what she believes in and she even does it with a little style. 

So don’t like Asami because she’s not your favorite character, but don’t use weak arguments to try and support them.

Don’t be sorry because this is exactly what people need to see out of Asami.
